2015 Be Brave Luncheon
On Wednesday, April 1, 2015 at the Shaw Conference Centre in Edmonton, the 3rd Annual Be Brave Luncheon took place to raise vital funds for Little Warriors and the Be Brave Ranch. 600 guests were ushered to their seats by our fabulous volunteer team of Starbucks employees from around Edmonton and area. Nancy Carlson, the Global News Hour Co-Anchor did a fabulous job emceeing the event. Scott McKeen, Ward 6 City Councillor brought greetings from the Mayor and our friend Ed Ferguson said Grace. A scrumptious lunch was served, and the guests were invited to watch a short clip from the documentary Building Brave. Dr. Jacqui Linder, the Clinical Director of the Be Brave Ranch then shared a bit of her story and how she got involved with Little Warriors. She was able to tell the guests about the progress the children at the ranch have been making since they began treatment. Alison Lee, an ambassador for Little Warriors was next to speak. Alison is a teenager who has raised over $30,000 for Little Warriors and she was one of the first to attend the Be Brave Ranch and receive treatment. Glori Meldrum then took the stage to address the crowd. Glori captured the audience with stories of the journey to build the Be Brave Ranch and told a few stories of the impact the ranch is making on children.
And then on to the keynote address. As Matthew Sandusky told his story, you could have heard a pin drop. He spoke about his childhood, his grooming process with Jerry Sandusky, the sexual abuse, the struggles and then the aftermath. As quoted in the Edmonton Sun article: "From the very first time this man met me and the grooming process started he was preparing me to eventually sexualize our relationship," Sandusky told the crowd. "The very first time he ever took me to a football game, he placed his hand on my knee in the car. I had just assumed being eight or nine years old that this is how people in loving families do things. As things moved forward and the grooming process progressed, I never told anybody, I never said anything, I never told him to stop. The hand went further, everything went further until I was eventually being full-on sexually abused."
The crowd offered a standing ovation when Matthew was done giving his address. Glori Meldrum then invited Trinity Fuhr to the stage to present Matthew with a Be Brave Award and to thank him for Standing Up and Being Brave.
Nancy Carlson closed off the event by thanking our sponsors, guests, donors and making a business card draw for a lunch for 8 at Ruth's Chris Steakhouse. Each guest at each table had the opportunity to bid on a centre piece that was hand painted by fine artist Giselle Dennis. View the wonderful pieces that were at each table at the event on our Facebook page here.
We would like to sincerely thank the event sponsors, table sponsors, invited guests and individuals who purchased tickets and the planning committee. We look forward to the 4th Annual Be Brave Luncheon in the spring of 2016!
